The Hungarian Olympic Committee supports the tender of Debrecen for the Youth Olympic Games

Presidency of the Hungarian Olympic Committee (HOC) decided in a two-hour-long emergency meeting to support the intention of Debrecen to make a tender for the I. Youth Olympic Games of 2010.

After listening the presentation of Debrecen city, management corporation of the HOC accepted the candidate intention of Debrecen for the event of three years later. Presidency of the HOC asks the government to give the guarantee of the terms of organisation that in the possession of it, city of Debrecen can send its declaration of intention to the International Olympic Games (IOC) in time and can make it founded.

The national olympic committees have to name the cities interested in the organisation till 31 August and applicants have to send in their tenders one week later. Though there are Berlin, Moscow, Athens and Torino between the candidates, according to Mr. Mihály Orendi, Debrecen has got real chance to win.

The managing director of Debrecen Sport Centre Kht. urged that with this sports event IOC would rather put smaller countries and cities, not metropolises, in favourable position. – There will be competition events of only fifteen sports in the Olympic Games and at most 4000 competitors and attendants can take part in it. The event does not require larger real estate investment, we have everything what is needed. – told Mr. Mihály Orendi to Napló.

On the basis of the sent tenders the expert corporate of IOC will choose the applicants who are becoming official candidate cities on 12th November. Between 3 and 18 December the assessment committee of IOC will visit the firstly chosen cities and then, by the end of January, this corporate is making its report. Members of IOC will vote for the organising city in letter by the middle of next February, which will be announced at the end of February.

Order of the application is the following:
31 August
The national olympic committees denominate cities interested in the organisation.
7 September
The cities send in their tenders.
12 November
On the basis of the tenders the corporate of IOC consisting of experts choose the applicants who will officially become „Candidate Cities”.
3-18 December
The assessment committee of IOC visits the firstly chosen cities.
End of January, 2008
The assessment committee will make its report.
Middle of February, 2008
Members of IOC vote for the organising city in letter.
End of February, 2008
