Sportsmen and Sportswomen of the Year 2008

The local newspaper Hajdú-Bihari Napló asked its readers and a professional jury to vote on the best sportsmen and sportswomen in the county in 2008. (Members of the jury included Vice-Mayor Zoltán Pajna, handball coach Ákos Komáromi, sports writer Attila Nehéz, Mihály Orendi, Director of the Debrecen Sport Centre Plc. as well as Zsolt Jantyik, Chair of the County Council’s Committee on Cultural, Sports and Civil Relations.)      

The talented sportsmen of the Debrecen Sport Centre and Sport School (DSC-SS) were awarded in six categories. The most successful sportsman turned out to be wrestler Sándor Tőzsér who received the highest number of votes both in the public poll and from the jury in the junior men’s category. According to the jury, the best sportswoman of the year was triathlete Zita Szabó, a participant of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. In the junior women’s category judoka Fruzsina Ferenczi was voted for the second position by the public whereas the professional jury put the excellent athlete Tibor Koroknai in the third place in the junior men’s category. In addition to the placements of individual sportsmen and sportswomen of our Sprot School, the athletic section of DSC-SS was also chosen for the second place among the junior teams.
