Főnix Will Be All Ice
The decision has been made, the organizing work is going on, nevertheless, only some people in Debrecen are aware that the city will be the venue of a world championship again. A world championship in one of the most popular branches of sport since international ice-hockey players will take over the Főnix Sports Hall between 13-20 December.
Debrecen hosts the world championship of U-20 Division 2 but do not think it is not as important as the Adult Group A championship: on the one hand, these young men are the new generation, the future of ice hockey, and, on the other hand, the event will really be international since in addition to Hungary, participants include Great Britain, Spain, South Korea, China and Mexico. It will be the third worldwide competition on ice in the Főnix Hall because Debrecen organized the World Junior Ice Hockey Division 2 Championship in 2004 and the memorable World Adult Division 1 with full houses in 2005.
The city of Debrecen supports the event (providing 10 million HUF in addition to the facilities) while the staff of the Debrecen Sport School as well as the Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation are already working for the success of the championship: the website, the program booklet and the logo are being made.
The Hungarian team is also preparing, they were practising in a preparation camp in October and played a match with the adult team of Újpest (1-4). In September J. P. MacCAllum’s team played against the national peer team of Romania and won twice (6-2, 7-1). So the Hungarians make all effort to reach the final goal: to get higher in ranking.
