The Balance of Forces Unfold
Slowly, the balance of forces between teams is beginning to unfold in the World Ice Hockey Championship in Debrecen. It seems – as it has been anticipated – that Great Britain will fight against Hungary for the first place to earn the promotion.
The second day started with a derby between first day’s winners, Great Britain and South-Korea. The match brought a dynamic, masculine battle of high standard. The motivated Koreans took the lead when Yong Ho Choi scored on powerplay at 7:52.
The Asians’ goal was answered by Laschowitz at 16:22 ending the first period 1-1. The well organized and agile British Team gave the Koreans a four-goal lead in the second period thanks to a double score by Mathew Davies and two further goals by Farmer and Bowie. Great Britain dominated the last period scoring 7-1 for Peter Russel’s team. Jun Hyung Cho, coach of Team South-Korea said: “After a fine first period, thanks to our characteristics and physical capabilities the British could score easily that shook our young team”: “If the game had been only one period we could have won but the opponent crushed us” said Won Seang Lee, best player of the Asians. “We will try to win on Wednesday then we can have a chance to earn the promotion”. Apparently, the Hungarians will have a say in that matter…
The Hungarian players did not have too much trouble with the Mexican team on the second day: After the first period they led the game by 10-0 (scorers: Orbán 2, Virág 2, Hardi, Pavuk, Nemes, Bartalis, Németh, Tóth A.). The play went swimmingly for the team scoring one goal after another finally winning 28-0. J. P. MacCallum, the Hungarians’ captain did not complain, naturally. “This match was a typical instance of big gaps between teams. We shall continue to do everything to earn the promotion.”
The second match of the day was not closer than the others. Spain won 12-0 against China proving that they can do better than the day before. “Our team did 100% today, we enjoyed the game. This World Championship is fantastic, I really enjoyed being on the ice”, said Munoz, the Spanish team’s best player.
Tuesday will be a day-off. On Wednesday, the Championship will continue in Phoenix Hall: China vs. Mexico (13:00) Great Britain vs. Spain (16:30) and Hungary vs. South-Korea (20:00)
