Awards for the bests

The Olah Gabor sports hall was fully crowded at the annual award gala of the Debrecen Sport Centre-Sport School for the best athletes of the year. Hundreds of talented young athletes, coaches and parents greeted each other with applause, acknowledging the previous year’s performance.

After managing director Mihaly Orendi’s welcome speech, the bests were awarded and the spectacular show began. The director called attention to the Sport School’s slogan ( We cannot afford to waste talents ) and throw the children into a fever. Following the sport leader’s encouraging speech hundreds of athletes took oath that they will be champions.

Sure enough, many did it in 2009. The athletes’ and coaches’ job from all the twelve sections was acknowledged, awards were given to athletes well performing at school as well, the most assiduous received public praise and the previous year’s best athlete titles were announced.

The athlete of the year became track and field athlete Gréta Kerekes, her coach László Donka was awarded best coach of the year. The team of the year was the ’93 Boy Basketball Team (players: Soma Asztalos, Márton Bak, Ádám Balogh, Lajos Kiss, Péter Mohay, Benedek Nagy, Botond Nagy, Szabolcs Nagy, Renátó Szarvas, Gábor Szathmári, Bertold Zahorán, coaches: Donát Barna, Ágoston Nagy), while the Lifetime Achievement Award went to Csaba Giczei.

The awards were presented by managing director Mihály Orendi, Olympic bronze medalist Imre Csősz, European Champion judoka, president of the city sports committee Tamás Szentei, the head of the culture and education department in the local government Mihály Süvöltős and the Hungarian and World Handball Team members.

Surely, many other athletes deserved acknowledgement as their supporting parents would deserve an honorable mention since all of them belong to the big family of the Sport School…
