The 1st IAAF World Road Running Championships were arranged irregularly in one of the most beautiful and the most natural part of Debrecen, in Nagyerdő where the building of University of Debrecen served as competition centre.

The competition was especially memorable since the official name-giving ceremony of Gyulai István Athletic Stadium and Training Centre was organized on the Eve of the world championships by which the city gives expression to its respect toward the not long ago departed general secretary of IAAF to whom not only Debrecen Sport Centre public Utility Co,, but Debrecen city can owe so much.
