11th LEN Short Course Swimming European
Championships

As a great sport diplomatic success, Debrecen could make home fot the Short Course Swimming European Championships of 2007. The decision of LEN, the continental federation, means that Hungary could be the host of the Sport’s continental summit events three times in three years after the two events in Budapest, the Youth ECh in 2005 and the Adult ECh in 2006. The worldlevel Debrecen Swimming Pool could be the home of an excellent competition, because seven world records and several European records were achieved. The success of the event was raised even further, because with its 4 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze medals the Hungarian team finished in the 4th position of the medal table.

European Athletics U23 Championships

The 6th European Athletics U23 Championshipis was arrenged between 12 and 15 July, 1007 in Gyulai István Athletics Stadium. Int he competition of athletes too old for junior age but being under 23 years old, almost one thousand competitors of 46 countries tried  their strength in 22 events. The unforgattable opening ceremony of the four-day-long competition took place int he centre of Debrecen, in Kossuth Square, and several thousand spectators watched it. During the competition three European records, ten champion records, four national records were achieved. Hansjörg Wirz, President of the European Athletics Association, ont he closing day of the European Championships expressed his thanks to Debrecen for excellent organization.

The 1st IAAF World Road Running Championships were arranged irregularly in one of the most beautiful and the most natural part of Debrecen, in Nagyerdő where the building of University of Debrecen served as competition centre.

The Gymnastics Championships for each apparatus was a success sporting event in 2002 in the Fõnix Hall. The first time in this sport the best European men and women competitors all together competed in Debrecen from 2-5th of June in 2005.

ETU European Duathlon Championships

According to the Hungarian Triathlon Association and the International Triathlon Association too the Duathlon European Championships in 2005 was big success in Debrecen. Clive Faine the president of the ITU duathlon committee said:

Not a very common event opened the great event scedule of 2005 at the Debrecen Sportcenre Public Company, as the division I hockey world championship was a real delicacy. During one week competitors of six nations - among them of course the hungarian team coached by Pat cortina - amused the fan in love with ice hockey in the Fõnix Hall, and nobody can complain about the athmosphere though the match and the standard would have been worth more viewers.

The Women Handball Championship from 9th to 19th of December was the most famous sporting event in 2004 in Hungary. Debrecen was one of the hosts cities.

There was big interest in this European Championships in the Fõnix Hall. This sport becomes more and more popular nowadays. There were 3500 spectators on the first day and on the finals' day on Sunday too.

The Sportcentrum Kht. got a plaquette from the organisers expressing their thanks for the excellent hospitality.

Six teams including the Hungarian national team were competing for the first place during a week in the Főnix Hall's ice-rink. Although the Ukrainians won in the end the Hungarians didn't have to be sad with the silver medal.

With the end of the Indoor World Championship of Athletics the Debrecen Sport Centre Public Utility Co. organized an International Coach Conference on 8-9 March, 2004.

It was a good idea that Debrecen undertook the organization of this event which would have been in an other city originally. Thanks for this the Főnix Hall was built and we managed to establish a good contact with the management of the international federation.

The new Athletic Stadium capable of holding thousand of spectators was built in the Oláh Gábor Sportcomplex for one of the most high ranking sporting event in the sporting history of Eastern Hungary. It was built in a very short period and now it is one of the best establishment in Debrecen.
